L.A. Mayor Karen Bass announced the hiring of Jim McDonnell as the new chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Jim McDonnell was named as the next LAPD chief of police Friday. Mayor Karen Bass announced McDonnell would be stepping in as chief of police at a 9 a.m.

McDonnell's selection means both the LAPD chief and Los Angeles County Sheriff will have come up through the Long Beach Police Department.

The decision to select McDonnell, who was an LAPD officer before serving as L.A. County sheriff, comes after a months-long search by Mayor Karen Bass.

Ahead of the news conference, there were several news reports and speculation she would be announcing the appointment. In early September, Bass told the Los Angeles Times she intended to make a decision on the hire by the end of the month,
