President Trump said Denmark will “come along” on the potential sale of Greenland and emphasized the U.S. and others need the Arctic island to fortify international security in the region.

Trump has not spoken publicly about the call, choosing instead to repost on social media the results of a 2019 poll that found that 68 percent of Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Wednesday she had spoken on the phone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and told him that it is up to Greenland itself to decide on any independence.
