Britain’s only remaining coal power plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire generated electricity for the last time on Monday after powering the United Kingdom for 57 years. The power plant came to the end of its life in line with the government’s world-leading policy to phase out coal power which was first signaled almost a decade ago.

BBC reported that Great Britain will cease producing electricity from coal, ending a 142-year dependence on this fossil fuel. The country's last coal-fired power plant, located in Ratcliffe-on-Soar, will be ceremoniously shut down on Tuesday.

Britain’s 21st-century path to zero-coal electricity was eased by events before the climate battle took off. The discovery of North Sea gas in the 1960s opened the way for the 1990s “dash for gas” by newly privatised generators.
