Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock drowned while swimming in the pool at his home in Athens, his family said in a statement. The England-born Greece international’s death was confirmed on Wednesday night at the age of 31.

Greek police earlier confirmed there was no evidence that criminal activity caused the death of the 31-year-old.

Panathinaikos defender George Baldock, a former Greece international who also played for Sheffield United for seven seasons, has been found dead in his Athens home, Greek media reported. He was 31.
