Roy Greene started The Citizen in 1954. It had many names throughout the years including the Phenix-Herald, The Citizen News and finally, The Citizen of East Alabama. Today, The Citizen reaches 14,000 homes and is the largest circulating weekly newspaper in Alabama. It reaches Russell and southern Lee counties, and is part of the Alabama Press Association. Our vision is to be the voice of East Alabama. We strive to educate the community on local events and news, as well as feature people who live here.
